This book has it all. Illustrations in black and white and a series of beautiful color photos that are just gorgeous to look at. They also help you to visualize what the text is explaining.Very well written, it covers the history of the sari in the different regions, and includes diagrams/instructions on how to drape a sari. This is a beautiful and informative book.
First I must say that Amazon does not have a good description of this book and so it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. The description here is extremely short, and thus when it stated "patterns", I was hoping for a choli/sari sewing pattern or two. It does not, but the pattern it is referring to, is the print on the sari. Not a big deal though.That said, the book is full of great information and while some pics may be slightly outdated, it is still a great book to add you your collection. Especially if you are interested in the history of the sari and the diversity that the different region inspire. Each section is listed out by region and goes into great detail with a multitude of photographs. I am pleased with the purchase and did not hold the Amazon description against them.
India is divided into regions, with a chapter dedicated to each regional style of the sari. Full of concise histories, color & blk/white photos.
Loved this book.It is also affordable for most people. It is very well written and gives a good idea about differences in regional styles of weaving. My only complain is that sometimes the pictures are difficult to relate to the text.Book inspired me to collect various regional styles of sarees. I went from not knowing much to knowing quite a bit. I bought it a while ago and just now writing about my experience. Highly recommend it.
I had been looking for a book about sarees for a long time-and I really lucked out when I found this. The colour photos are magnificent-you can see the detailing and the richness of the fabrics very well, and the quality is excellent. Not to mention, the text is fabulous-the history of the saree is very interesting, and I especially like the way the book is broken down into regions, with each region detailing its saree style. The hand-drawn illustrations showing the many different ways to drape a saree were easy to follow and informative. The only gripe I had with this book-which I feel was very important-was the relatively small number of photos of women actually dressed in the sarees. A beautiful saree just hanging there is nothing more than a pretty piece of fabric-when it's draped around a lady's body it takes on a whole new dimension! However, this is the only and best book I've found on this subject....and if you're a saree lover or a fashion historian, this book is for you!
